Today (January 4, 2015), we celebrate the solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord. It is the manifestation of God’s presence not only to the Jews represented by the shepherds but to the Gentiles as well represented by the three wise men. While the shepherds were directed by an angel, the magi were guided by a bright star. They all found the newborn Child-
They were wise because they were willing to make the long pilgrimage, and sacrifice years of their lives in order to find the Lord. They were wise because when they found Him in a manger together with his mother, they gave the most valuable gift they had, Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh and realized that not even those were enough. The greatest gift that they have offered was their humility of heart, when they fell on their knees and adored the child. They were wise because they listened to the message of God through a dream and did not go back to Herod.
We too, can be like those wise men if we are willing to make whatever sacrifices necessary to search for God by following the star of our faith. We can be like them if we are willing to present to Him the best and greatest gift we can offer with all humility, the gift of abiding love and devotion. Finally we can be like the wise men if we are able to know and to follow the right path. As the new year begins may we be resolved to have a firm determination to change our ways.
